CHEERS! Chuckie TA-DA!!! She has reached her FINAL "resting place"!! Dwayner & I always called her "Gráinne"--after the Irish pirate queen a/k/a Grace O'Malley. Me S.I.L. has decided on "Elphaba"--the green skinned wicked witch of the west from "Wicked"--whom I never KNEW had a NAME until today!!! H-O-W apropos, given ALL the trouble she dealt US during her "wicked" restoration!!! She doesn't look NEAR as intimidating IMHO in THIS environment as she did in me BARN!! And her "feet" won't look so "gangly" after the FINAL front-2-back positioning and "mock feet fronts" that will cover them. Updates after dwayner gets here in the near future to finish the installation---stay TUNED!! CHEERS! One Happy Chuckie

Are you sure that's not back stage shots of a millionaires house renovation. Haven't we seen the same stove in a prominent New York socialites kitchen. Honestly that's a show stopper. The copper adds a low key glitzy warmth. I can't wait till we see it all back together with the back, shelf & the iron brackets you had custom cast. The green porcelain is a neat & unique touch. Easier on the eyes than white too.

Well, FIRST off, I went out last Thursday before dwayner was to arrive, to check on fittings we might need. Where that plank is in front of the door is where we go in/out, and the truck had the corpse 'hidden' until I stepped around the corner, screamed like a girl, and about $hite meself!!! The workers had killed it, and left it where it was slain to startle their boss--backfired cause they scared ME!! I do NOT "do" snakes!! Here it is, w/the backsplash on. Note all the OTHER contractors' $hite scattered about the room!! Those boards/trim are native hackberry. The dude that built the house in the late 60's milled them on the place, and hung them. Me Da did the original heating/ac, and knew a bunch of stories about the house & construction. He said when the hackberry was first installed, you could about stick a butter knife in them, no problem, they were that soft. Now you have to PRE-drill a hole to drive a nail in them, they're so hard!! Kinda reminds me of pallet wood. The beams on the ceiling were salvaged by the contractor from 1870's barracks from Fort Leavenworth, the thick steps going upstairs were cut out of old salvaged bridge timbers--'twas HIS house he was building, so he pulled no punches. He even installed a Chambers Model D--which is what got ME started on the Chambers journey!!! OK, I know, I digress, on w/the tale!!
Himself, attaching the gas line & soaping to check the leaks: Big oven, fired up. The movers busted the spot weld on the bigun's back damper, so my nephew was fixing it, ergo dwayner couldn't calibrate, as no back damper in place:Small (normal "A" sized oven) seemed "close" on temps, but "the PRO" wants to calibrate it AGAIN when he returns in August! The reason being was, he'd HAD the oven running, and it was running on the high side. There was NO AC hooked up in the house yet, and with the 23K big oven going--along w/the 18K small oven & FIVE 12K top burners going, it was puttin' out a L-O-T of heat!!! Dwayner advised Paul he'd BETTER go ahead & hook up a vent pipe to the venting system in back and consider a hood, as he held his hand over the flue collar when everything was on, and it was PUMPING out some heat!! Paul not too charmed, another "change" for the general contract = mo' $$$ He was NOT charmed w/ME, as I said it did NOT need to be vented--I just meant it didn't need to be vented because of the FUMES, I had NO IDEA the heat it'd put out!! Oh well...
All five top burners going, looks like a bunch of cartoon characters w/a "toothy grin"!!
My nephew got the back welded for the big oven, dwayner painted it w/high heat paint, and had the entire venting system installed for the FIRST time since I took it apart back in 2012!!! Monkey's folks were married on the 4th of July, so dwayner did all this while we were at 11:00 am Mass which was said for her parents.
I understand they "blistered" some fresh green beans in a cast iron skillet for their first cooking experience. Our nephew Charlie had cooked a HUGE brisket all day on the Weber smoker--though I TRIED to convince him to use the Chambers, even brought out THEE biggest Lisk roaster for them to use! His sister Claire was also gonna cook some brownies in the small oven, but as you can SEE, the kitchen is still pretty "primitive" to say the least, so she may NOT have--forgot to ask. The three kids came back w/their Dad for the 4th, and EACH brought a coupla friends!!! Too primitive for THEM, so Papa had to "spring" for a coupla suites in the "new" hotel in Leavenworth--which was my old Catholic High School, Immaculata!!
So stay tuned, updates in a month or so when himself returns. He's on his way to Salt Lake to drop off a top/pick one up that's finished, then on to Washington State to spend some time w/ Mach12 & his lovely bride Stephanie. Dwayner is gonna stop here for a few days rest on his return trip. CHEERS! Chuckie

That has been some project! And the finish line is in sight, but the last lap is always the hardest. All the little details to wrap it up, and you always feel like something is being forgotten. I can’t wait to see that stove like a jewel in its new setting when it’s all finished!

LOL, the other day, I went back to page one, and re-read the entire, arduous journey--took me over an HOUR!! And a LOT of the stuff I had totally forgotten, and one or two things I was like, " W-O-W, you did THAT?!!" LOL, didn't remember doing it, and nowadays don't think it in my capabilities!!! LOL
I THINK you can make a book @ Walmart with pix, etc., as my S.I.L. has done so after family get togethers here. Perhaps I should look into that...

We always say stuff like "if this stove could only talk", so capturing this piece of its history would be pretty nice. Especially a couple of generations from now when we're all on the other side of the weed patch. Could even inspire some kids or something. Maybe even start a whole new generation of Chambers enthusiasts or something. Or not, LOL.

On a job like this, you can't look at the end of the road. You just have to keep plugging till you get there. The only timeline is when it's done.
When Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, he never finished it. He continued working at it for years until the end of his life. At least with a stove, once you've redone all the surfaces, refurbished all the mechanics, then assembled all the parts, & adjusted all the functions, you can say you're done. There's always some minor tweaking, but then, you have to walk away. Set it free to live another life or two.

There's always some minor tweaking, but then, you have to walk away. Set it free to live another life or two. Don Mattera is the latest hero in the Imperial saga--he had the top shelf we needed, and had UPS pack/ship it to us!!!! And THEN the "scourge of the Imperial" strikes again!!! The shelf had a few scuff marks you could tell--appropriate for it's age and the harsh "lifestyle" these commercial ranges had! Not to worry about THOSE, was to be reporcelained anyway. HOWEVER, UPS was ROUGH on it as well!!! Here's a few pix: You can still see a few shards of the broken porcelain, clinging to the metal in this pic. All in all, there was probably better than a 1/3 cup of porcelain pieces in the box!! Those I bagged up as well.
The only one that really worries me is one of the damaged parts in the last pic is DIRECTLY on the rolled edge. Looks like they ran a two wheeler w/a heavy load on it over the top of it. I just hope that Jeff @ IPE can get it straightened out. I will be in contact w/him and ask his advice. There is an EXCELLENT body shop @ the dealership where I work, and I can have them take a look @ it if Jeff wants. Don was NOT a happy camper when I contacted him, to say the least!!! He said that's why he had THEM pack it up, so THEY would be responsible for any and all damages! Again, I'm am N-O-T holding Don in anyway responsible for this, as it was NOT his fault AT ALL! He said he does "a LOT of business" with them--which I'm sure he DOES with Mattera Stove works!--and "I’m sure we will come to a satisfactory agreement"! I'll just be SO GLAD when this spawn of the divil is all in one piece, and I'm looking @ it in the rear view mirror!!! And methinks Don thinks the same way about these as I do--one of his text to me in working out arrangements for the shelf: "what a PITA. I swear all these Imperials are cursed". No wiser words were ever spoken!!!! CHEERS! Chuckie

More than likely it got to the end of a conveyor belt and other packages got pushed up against it and buckled the package. Or it got put in a trailer and a lot of weight ended up on top of it. Long fragile things like that really need something like a 2 x 4 put in with them or put inside a piece of plastic pipe. I know it shouldn't be that way with shipping companies, but it's just the way things are. UPS is having a hard time getting help hired and most places are understaffed now. It's the same thing with the other companies as well. Hopefully, it won't be too much trouble to get sorted out, but boy it's just sickening when things like that happen.
Gosh that's a beautiful stove and it's really nice to see it coming together for you. It's too bad all the folks that built those things new are gone now as I'm sure they would be shocked and pleased at how much goes into making them look and act like new again. You can tell by how things were being built in the 1930's that it never occurred to them that those things would ever go out of 'style'. GE felt that way about those Monitor Top refrigerators, and those things usually work just fine after new power cords are put on them. Well, good luck with that unfortunate turn of events. I'm sure it will come out just fine, but setbacks can sure be frustrating.

That's sickening to finally find that last part & have it bashed around like that.
The USPS is a shadow of it's former self. I see postings on Reddit all the time about postal carriers folding things like record albums & diplomas that are labeled "DO NOT FOLD" in order to fit them in small mail boxes. And as earlh says above, I think they're having a hard time hiring good people. A lot of people in all kinds of jobs don't have the high work ethics they used to. Too many of them just don't seem to care anymore. Plus a lot of employers don't want to pay enough to get good people either. Hopefully Jeff at IPE can make it good again.
I get away with way too much at my job, because I'm like gold to them. I always show up, out work any two of my coworkers, & go above & beyond daily. I'd walk away in a heartbeat if I could be sure I could step into a better job for more money. Last night I walked into a disaster. It took me almost three hour just to catch up. Then we had a bus load show up right before closing, & they were there till way after, so I was there till 1 AM, & there was still stuff I often do that I left. On top of that, we just hired a bunch of new people who haven't got a clue. It's a never ending nightmare daily, but it pays the bills.

I can only imagine your frustration at this turn of events, Chuckie! I truly hope that when you finally get to cook on this beast all the setbacks will become amusing anecdotes to regale your friends at the K of C with as you lay platters of delectable delights in front of them!
I know what you mean, Earlh and Pooka. My school added some new aides this past year to help out with the Covid situation and they needed to be reminded more than once by the principal to refrain from texting and put away their phones while they were supervising the children.🙄

With UPS Pack & Ship does that include insurance? I looked on the UPS website and they seem to avoid the subject other than info on how to pack stuff to avoid damage, which leads me to believe that they're going to try to blame the person or company packing it. That would be them with the Pack & Ship option, I would think, but I ain't too smart, and I ain't no lawyer, but it kind of seems that way. UPS used to be a good shipper but more and more companies are dropping them, like the company that does the photo packages for my granddaughter's studios. Too many lost and damaged packages with UPS, so they've gone strictly FedEx. Jeff at IPE tells me that R+L Carriers seems to have the least claims on panels and other items he does so said that's who he tended to use. That has been a few years and I'm not sure whether that's still the case but when I checked them out they're sure a well liked company - and still are.
Good thing you have a local source for porcelain repair. Not many of us have that luxury, so at least there's that.

The guy that shipped it was there when he went in to file the claims, and asked Don if he had pix. I THINK Don said he commented on the "crappy packing job" the guy did, and showed him the pic w/the damaged box too. Guy says, " uhhhhhhhhh, that is NOT the box I packed it in, that's just a box for SKIS, somebody damaged it along the way, and RE-packaged it!" So there is THAT in our favor too. I'm V-E-R-Y confident w/Mr. Mattera going to bat. He's a no-bullshit kinda guy, and like he says he does TONS of biz w/them, so I'm HOPING we'll get a satisfactory outcome. Got a quote from Jeff @ IPE on reporcelaining costs, and also took the shelf into the EXCELLENT body shop @ the dealership I work for. They are to give me a bid as well. If the package was "re-boxed" along the way, there should be an exception noted at whatever center re-boxed it. And, the shipping label would have been cut off the old package and re-taped to the new one if that's what happened. UPS will only pay for the amount of the insurance on the item and if they pay more than that, it's up to them and they rarely do that. The problem will be how much it costs to straighten out the shelf. If it ends up being more than the insurance on the shelf, they will more than likely want to keep the shelf if they pay the whole amount. You might want to go to whatever your packages get delivered from, and talk to someone in management there and see if they can help. Have the tracking number with you as that will make it a lot easier for them to pull up the information on it. The management team in my center is really pretty decent as long as the customer is being decent to them and they really don't like having folks mad at them. They do understand how frustrating this sort of thing is. If it was damaged when the person re-boxed it, it should have been sent back to the shipper. That's the part that seems kind of odd to me as damaged packages are not supposed to be delivered without you getting a phone call, or the shipper getting one. Also, let them know that it's an antique and you need to keep the item. You don't want them to pick it up to "investigate the claim" And then send a check to the pack and ship place, and toss the package out. The guy that packaged the item up, is the one that will need to deal with them in the end as he's the one that paid for the insurance. If you go to your center with the tracking number, they should also be able to tell you how much it was insured for.
I got into a mess with an electric motor a long time ago that I bought on ebay and the housing was broken when I got it. I think it was already broken when he sold it as there was no evidence of damage on the box. It was a heavy old cast iron motor for a player piano. The guy gave me my $300 back right away and then got into a huge mess with the guy at the UPS store. He paid for $500 worth of insurance on the motor, but the guy at the UPS store didn't actually insure the package at all, so UPS would only pay $100. I got SO many nasty messages from that guy, that ebay finally kicked him off ebay over it! I still don't know why the guy was mad at me too. Good luck with the whole thing. I hope it goes well for you and it works out in the end. Earl

I hope it goes well for you and it works out in the end. Earl Neither Don nor I are out to "take" UPS. It just totally IRKED Don--and ME--that he TOLD the guy I was in KANSAS, and ordering a shelf for a 1935 Imperial from RHODE ISLAND, because there was none to be FOUND elsewhere, so PLEASE spare NO COST(S) in packaging!!! Don reiterated that fact when he paid the man, as neither eBay, cragislist nor searchtempest has ANY for sale, and HAVEN'T had any since I BOUGHT the stove sans a shelf in 2014, nor do I ever suspect to SEE one again!! Don had bought the stove the shelf came from years ago as a basket case, and decided he's no longer interested in pursuing restoration for himself, so he offered me the shelf. And if you'll check Mr. Mattera's website, all he DEALS in is Chambers Ranges, hence my contacting him. I sincerely HOPE we didn't come across as trying to "scam" UPS or anyone ELSE, I just would be DELIGHTED if United Parcel Service could pull an UNDAMAGED replacement shelf outta their ASS that would fit my 7961-B4, circa 1935 Imperial Range that I've searched for since 2014, and then ship it here to me UNDAMAGED!!! I was NOT concerned too much w/the PORCELAIN damage, as I had intended to have it reporcelained anyway to match the Imperial I have. I'm just concerned that on one part of the damage, it "rolled" the already 'rolled edged'---RIGHT on the front/center of the shelf where it will SHOW--and the body shop is concerned that they may not be able to fix it w/o 'tearing' the metal when straightening it. And I'm fairly CERTAIN that damage will SHOW when reporcelained. And same thing w/the corner that is like "punched in"--again, they don't know if they can "fix" that to where the porcelain will STICK, and NOT show any sign of damage. Any type fillers I'm sure shops normally use would NOT stand the temps it takes to porcelain something. And this is after spending several THOUSAND and about as many HOURS in restoration only to get at this stalemate I'm at now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to take it to a specialty shop like Great Western here in town to have a shelf BUILT using the f*cked up one as a TEMPLATE will cost me MORE than WTF I PAID for this one that may now be USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope this clarifies things. I was just TOTALLY DELIGHTED to finally FIND the elusive missing part I had searched the GLOBE for since PURCHASING the stove in 2014, only to have it damaged on it's way to Kansas!! Sorry if I sound PISSED, but that is a very f*ckin' MILD way to state how I feel at this very moment, after fighting this evil bitch for SEVEN long years, and STILL no end in sight...
Signing off,
Chuckie

It’s the length of the search and the irreplaceable nature of the shelf that makes it sting so bad. I hope they can fix it. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

This is one of those cases where you have to ask, how do you replace or compensate for the irreplaceable. I'd like to think the UPS will try to make it good, but like in a court room where you sue for damages & compensation for a loss of something. It all comes down to a dollar figure. There is no real way to make it good, but a real number has to be arrived at.
The UPS used to be one of those institutions that we trusted almost unquestionably. The vast majority of their workers take that very seriously. In any large institution, there will always be a bad apple here & there, but for the most part, I'd still trust them. In more recent years, they've been pressed to the wall by political & market pressures, & questionable leadership that shakes our confidence in them. I'm afraid their remedy will never seem to tow the line in as to rectifying the damage, but we'll see what they offer as a solution. I'm hoping Jeff at IPE can make the shelf presentable again, but how much UPS is willing to pay is the question.
We'll just have to put our hopes in the hands of The Fates. In the words of the old Dorris Day song,
"Que Sera, Sera Whatever will be, will be The future's not ours to see Que Sera, Sera What will be, will be"

I'm sorry if my post's about UPS gave the impression that I thought you weren't handling this with a great deal of integrity. I would be VERY aggravated over a mess like this as well. The money is one thing, but the amount of time it takes to sort a mess like that out is also a huge part of it. I really hate to see customers upset with me over something getting damaged that can't be replaced. By far, most of the stuff that gets damaged is through poor packing. And then its usually laundry soap that the lid falls off, or paint cans breaking open. Both make a huge mess.
I have been kind of thinking about what I'd do if this happened to me, and it reminded me of a guy about 20 years ago that bought something and had it sent next day air, so he would have it for sure by the end of the week. I think it was a Christmas tree of all things, but whatever it was, it was a large package. It was supposed to be to his place by Monday but for some reason got stuck in the system in Ohio. He got in touch with the center manager in Ohio and she got really snotty with him and told him something along the lines of "your package isn't the only one in the system!" He told her he would understand if it was a small box, but this thing was 6 ft long! It still took another few days, so he just wrote a letter to UPS's headquarters and just said something along the lines of "I thought I was doing the right thing by choosing UPS and now this happened". He got a really nice letter back saying that his letter was read to the board of directors, the lady in question would never be in a position to get smart with a customer like that again. And they included a check for $500 and wished him the best for a Merry Christmas!". He wasn't expecting that at all, but he did feel much better about the ordeal. He made a copy of the letter and I gave it to my supervisors. They both said she was probably looking for a job after that. So, maybe you could send a letter to Atlanta and include a few pictures of your stove, et.
My boss rode with me on Thursday and I told her about it. She said that she wouldn't be able to make any real decisions on how to settle a complaint like that, but the Customer Service person in your center probably could and if he couldn't, then someone on a district level should be able to. I don't know any of the people down your way, I'm up in North Iowa and most of the folks up the food chain so to speak that I used to know, are all retired now. I only have two more years left myself, so I'm an old has-been as well! I'll be glad to do some asking if you'd like. I'd really like to see a good outcome with your stove, gosh that's a beautiful piece of history you have there and you've sure done wonders with it.

Your helper's on the way Chuckie, as I'm sure you've probably heard. Dwayner left here the other day after spending a few weeks with us and we sure miss having him around. He's stopping off in Iowa (Waterloo) to swap out the panels on a 90C we gave my wife's nephew and his wife as a belated wedding gift, so the Chambers tasks continue. As does my debt to him. I'm running out of arms and legs.
I'm looking forward to seeing that shelf on that stove!

Wow Chuckie, your stove looks great! Mine is still in pieces for now. I've been off projects for a few years but I'm starting again - I decided to restore my big Roper first.
Sorry to read about the damage to the top shelf, hopefully a good auto body shop or sheet metal shop can fix it. Mine has more damage than that, I'm hoping it can be fixed.

I just went through and saved most of the pictures. I've been through a few computers in the past several years and, while I know I have my pics somewhere, I haven't found them yet. Thanks for posting all of this detail Chuckie.
EDIT: Found an old 4 Gb SD card with the pics but you took a few pics of things I didn't so this restoration log is very helpful. If I would have had my act together for the past decade we could have restored ours together - step by step - and we could have helped each other out as needed. As it is, I'm getting back into the game and I decided to restore my big Roper first because 1. it goes with my kitchen and decor better and 2. it is in MUCH better shape.
