you would think a simple silicone mold with fiberglass resin backer would be easy and cheap enough to make and would last for years

Well, I guess b4 you guys organize a posse & come to Leavenworth, I'd better post some updates! Thanks for the emails asking where I be. I just decided I was out here WAY TOO MUCH and thought I'd p.o.'d a coupla people, so I decided to take a sabbatical. I might have been gone, but I wasn't idle! This Imperial has been the STOVE-FROM-HELL----I have had to cut/burn/grind off 99.9% of ALL the bolts/nuts. Had I done this one FIRST, I'd of NEVER done another Chambers!! I got the beast FINALLY torn down to the frame, and she was pretty nasty!Note one of the aforementioned cut off bolts laying thereAfter TONS of wire brushing and paint stripper, was FINALLY ready to use the two part Por-15 paint prep. That stuff is GREAT, and took her down to bare metal!!! She's ready for the Por-15 now!! I had TWO 70 degree days here last month. After hosing off the prep stuff REALLY WELL , I applied the Por-15 (has to be @ least 65 to use):THREE coats of Por-15. That splotchy looking areas are where I think I took too long to apply--can says ONLY pour into a paint tray what you can use in 20 minutes or less. Some more before/after photos. Nasty thumblatches prior:Blasted w/walnut shells:Painted w/Por-15 & reassembled with new stainless steel nuts/bolts:Started on the outside of the small oven box yesterday. The bottom is shot, and my brother has to make a new one for me:Back of small oven box b4 cleanup. Will remove the damper later & take home to clean on brass wire brush bench grinder:After cleaning: Right side before cleaning:After wire brushing--will take bracket off to go home to grinder:I have TONS more of cleaning to do on the oven boxes. Then will come the Por-15 routine once warm weather returns. I have the large oven inside box getting re-porcelained @ IPE. It was just TOO nasty, looked like someone left Easy-Off in there, it was all chalky white. Hopefully I can clean up the smaller oven innards good enough, otherwise off it goes to IPE as well. They've still got my top, drip pans, grates & broiler box. Since those are some of the LAST things I'll need to reassemble, not too upset about that! I bought a Model A in KC from eBay for $50. Was led to believe all I had to do to remove the oven box was take off four bolts like the Imperial has. Well, that puppy was WELDED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE FRAME--only way to remove would've been to CUT it off! Also, on the Imperial, one of the door hinges was busted out, so I just left the frame attached to the "A" outer oven box and cannibalized the cast iron oven front/innards for the small Imperial oven. Stay tuned for more updates as they develop! CHEERS! Chuckie

You've accomplished a lot, I've been idle and really haven't touched my Imperial other than to move it out of my way.
Do you have to replace the bottom of the large oven too? If so, have your brother make two - I need one and will pay. In fact, I should probably also get a small oven bottom as well since there are two damper holes in the bottom (only one in the Model A oven I bought to replace the small oven) and it would match the set up on the lever system, although that wouldn't be too hard to modify.

SO EXCITED!!! Jeff @ IPE just emailed me that they got the Imperial large oven box interior done--he sent pix too, and it looks GREAT!!!! ;D Here's a shot of the SMALL oven interior--don't have shot of large here @ work. This'll give you an idea of how BAD it was, as the big one was WORSE than this one! And after shots:Jeff JUST emailed me the last two pieces too:Now I gotta come up w/the dough to go get 'em! Quoted me $300 for the five pieces. Dancin' with JOY!! ;D ;D ;D ;D Santa came early, I can now FINALLY start reassembly!!! ;D ;D ;D CHEERS! Chuckie

Very nice. You have the advantage that you can drive there. I have to ship all of this stuff and since I'm redoing ALL of the porcelain on the stove, that will be an expensive shipping bill; and that is not counting IPE's bill.

That green I'm liking the chrome brackets. Since I plan on having Imperial redone in black, the chrome would look great. But, I'm having the stove top redone in chrome, so I'll have to decide whether the brackets look better black or chromed.

Question 58ltd, can you do chrome on a top originally porcelain or is you imperial top already chrome. I remember reading that wasn't possible, but I'd like to know for future reference.

That green I believe Don uses IPE for his reporcelaining. If that be the case, IPE doesn't even DO that colour of "green". Here's Don's samples posted on his site: www.matterastoveworks.com/images/porcelainnames.jpgI am Irish & "partial" to green, but NOT that variety!! Again I have been down to IPE numerous times, and don't recall THAT colour on their sample ring! CHEERS! Chuckie

Vaporvac: no, you have it bassackwards, you CAN chrome stuff that was PORCELAINED, but NOT if it was CHROMED. Some chemical process of chrome will NOT allow porcelain to adhere to the surface, but no probs w/chrome over porcelain. I got this from 3 local chromers and Jeff @ IPE. And after looking @ the pic again, looks like they chromed the legs as well! CHEERS! Chuckie

Here's some samples from IPE that someone posted quite a while ago. And there's that weird green that IPE calls #18 GREEN. I think I could live with any of these EXCEPT that color green. Those chrome brackets do look cool, but you can do TOO MUCH chrome. I know a lot of things from the 50's were literally dripping in chrome, but Chambers was always restrained with there use of it on their stoves. Chrome brackets would accent a black cook-top along with the nickle plated griddle, polished aluminum Thermowell lid & chrome handles. But I think with a chrome cook-top & chrome brackets might be a little over the top. It's a matter of balance. Chrome on a stove is like jewelery on a woman, too much is just gaudy. And the wrong mix just looks strange. One piece of jewelery should compliment or accent the others, & not compete or clash with each other. A balanced mix is what one should strive for. 58limited, you say you're going to do your stove in black porcelain with a chrome top. That sounds beautiful, but how about doing the brackets in copper platting. If you did them in black porcelain, they wouldn't stand out against the black back-splash. They would blend in TOO much. If you do them in chrome, they would be out-shined by the chrome top. But copper brackets against the black back-splash would be an understated visual appeal & not try to compete with the the glow of a chrome cook-top. Maybe even burnished copper. I think that would give it an classy old world flair without being too flashy. What do you think?

Does anyone have any good photos of the rear of the Imperial? On ours, there appears to have been two "chimneys" for the two oven vents, now long gone, as well as the venting for the broiler. Also the damper assembly for the thermowell is gone, although the rod that actuated it is still there. Would love to see how that was all built originally so we can fabricate what is needed. Thanks! Don Mattera helped me out with the rear photos! Thanks Don.
We'll be following this thread closely as we tear ours down.
That green one is something for sure! Not sure I like it on that stove, although I do like green. I see they chromed the legs too.
So wonder what is cheaper, chroming or re-porcelaining?
That may make a cost difference when consdering shipping, especially for something as large as the top. I could probably find a local shop to chrome something like the top and avoid shipping if the cost works out. Would have to decide if we really liked a chromed top and how it would hold up.
