My latest aquisitions: I already HAVE a vintage waffle iron that I love and use, but could not resist this one, pricey at $11 in spirited bidding. I feel like I could make waffles for the Queen with this one. This rocker I picked up for free after the auction ended. I guess they thought it wouldn't sell because it needs to be re-caned, but the shape called to me, with those mermaid tail arms, and after cleaning with Murphy's oil soap, it is just beautiful. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but it looks handmade, lovingly repaired in a few spots, which only adds to its charm for me. I know a lady who does re-caning, but I checked out a few tutorials and it seems like the kind of crafty thing I might be good at. I'm going to try, at least.

That's a cool waffle iron. Probably from the late 20s or early 30s. I saw a similar but a little newer one at Goodwill last week that had been marked down to $10. It had Bakelite handles. I was tempted but I resisted. I like my stove-top ones, though they aren't as glamorous. I ran across this link about something called ‘Waffle Frolic’ a while back about something that was popular in early America up till the 50s. Believe it or not, that Victorian rocker was probably made in a factory. You'd be amazed by the machines they devised to make the parts. I love the graceful curves everywhere, especially the whale tails arms. I'll bet it's really comfortable too. Abraham Lincoln was seated in a similar but more elaborate upholstered rocker when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in 1864. It's now in the The Henry Ford Museum. These are frequently called Lincoln rockers for that reason. It'll be a real prize once it's re-caned. It's hard to resist free stuff as elegant as this. Well worth putting some time & effort to bring it back to it's glory. I need to make a post of some of my recent finds. My mind is currently consumed at the thought of paying my house off on the 14th. My home owners insurance installment is due the week before, so I'm so broke. I'll have to borrow money to live on from my brother to get over this hump. After that, I have a long list of other things to divert that excess money to catch up on a lifetime procrastination. I'll be too broke to celebrate. Maybe next month I'll do that when I don't have to write that house payment check ever again.

Great finds, nana! You'll have to post an after picture of the lovely rocker, once it is re-caned. And of course, you'll need to show us how well your waffle maker works!

I need to see if I can get a new power cord for the waffle iron. The one it has is not original. It has a little tag on it that says "replacement", and it is plastic, not the cloth cover that I bet it had originally. But anyway, it is not strong enough for the job it has to do. I plugged the iron in to see if it worked, and it did start heating up, but very slowly. I went to unplug it and the plug and cord were VERY hot. Also, in order to clean the grids it looks like I'll have to unscrew them. My waffle frolic will have to wait! Another thing for the backburner, I guess, at least until the garden and the chickens give me a moment to catch my breath! Hooray on your house Pooka! It is such a good feeling to be out of debt. You're gonna love it!

Oh, I forgot to mention I also got two unopened packages of something called Tin Lizzie. Each has a sheet of tin and a little bottle of some kind of acid or something, and can be used to re-tin a 9" copper pot, or patch smaller spots as needed. Someone bought a box of teacups and other crockery and they were in it, and when I offered to buy it off him, he just gave them to me. I wasn't going to bid on the box myself because I need more teacups like I need a hole in the head!

Not yet, like so many other things in my life it's on the list. But I may get around to it when I'm recuperating from my knee surgery this fall. I'm going to need something not too taxing to keep me occupied for 8 weeks. I keep it in my living room, though. It sure is pretty!
