I was browsing through ebay listings looking for interesting vintage cookbooks last week, when I scrolled past a photo of something that looked awfully familiar... I wasn't going to buy it, but my cookbook hoarding enabler, sporko , talked me into it. It arrived this afternoon and while I haven't had much time to look through it, I did see that the copyright is 1951 and there is a little blurb in the acknowledgements section that reads: Cover photograph by the Tony Venti Studios; Chambers gas range illustrated on cover is by courtesy of The Chambers Corporation, Shelbyville, Indiana. Anyway, I thought it was kind of a fun find and wanted to share it with the people I knew who would appreciate it!

By the looks of the handles, she's using everything BUT the broiler/oven... Busy girl, Suzie Homemaker was!! CHEERS! Chuckie

That's a real find! We have an original copy of Marion Flexners "Out of Kentucky Kitchens" and it's a really good cookbook. I had no idea that she had this one out there too. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a copy (speaking of cookbook hoarding...). Congratulations on a really cool find!!

What a find! Is that the chocolate brown colour? Mach12, I've never heard of that cookbook....but I collect regional ones, especially from my neck of the woods. I'm only 6 miles from Ky!

The Chambers on the cookbook is red, but now that you mention it, it does look brown in my photo. It's funny, but I grew up with brown appliances (optimistically called coppertone, I believe), and I thought they were so awful as a kid. Now I kind of like them.

She has another called the Dixie cookbook but I haven't found a copy yet that wasn't less than a couple of hundred bucks. Way out of my range! My wife's grandfather was from a little town in Kentucky called Gus and the cookbook we have was a gift from his family to my mother-in-law. They were living in Germany when she got it and says they had a lot of fun cooking stuff that reminded her of her parents and it was really a hit with the rest of the families in my father-in-law's Army unit. She gave me all of her old cookbooks several years ago and almost every one of them has a story connected to it. I collect cookbooks too and often wish they could speak and tell me their stories. That's probably why I like to get the ones that are all marked up with notes on various recipes. That's a great article. Thanks for posting it!

Confessions of a cookbook junkie... I searched for the Marion Flexner's "Out of Kentucky Kitchens" book yesterday and when I saw the cover, I realized I already have it! I looked around this afternoon and found it, then in kind of a funny coincidence, I opened it right up to a recipe for zimtsterne (German cinnamon star cookies). I was just lamenting on Sunday that the store where I used to buy them for Christmas hasn't had them for the last 2 years. I have never tried to make them because they look difficult, but I feel like Mrs. Flexner is calling me out here.

You go girl! I got two kinds of cookie dough made up today, ready to bake next week when the highs are single digits.

You are hilarious, karitx. I'm feeling another post coming on! What a great idea to make the dough ahead. I may do that and bake them this weekend if it snows.

I don't know how many times I've found a cool cookbook and came home all excited, went to put it on the shelf, and there was already a copy there. My kids and granddaughters love it when that happens since they then get to add to their collections (I've turned them into cookbook junkies to some degree too). I tried making a list but it seemed like whenever I stumbled across something I didn't have the list. I wish my old brain still worked well enough to recognize a cover and know that I already had it!

I like the idea of making the cookie dough ahead, too. Does it work with most cookie doughs, cinnabar?
And for the record, I can't remember the last time we had highs in the single digits around here! Brrr!

For cookie dough that needs to "chill". I have the butter cookie cutouts(my Grams best ever) and ginger bread cut outs to roll and bake. When making the dough and then having to roll, cut, and bake, my small kitchen is mayhem, not to mention I am exhausted. This way I spread the process over several days. Even the frosting can be done later, if the cookies haven't been scarfed down. I have kept the chilled dough(chocolate chip too) for up to a week with no ill effects.
