There've been several discussions posted where the subject of bean pots came up and after coming across one that I really like in an estate sale I'm curious about experiences using them in a Chambers, especially in the Thermowell.
I have a West Bend bean pot with the hot plate and an extra pot for it so was originally considering trying that in the T-well but figured it'd be best to use a heat diffuser. Then I found this one, which is a 1/2 gallon pot that just fits in the Thermowell. The problem is that with the top on the pot there isn't room for a diffuser. There's a really cool collector website with copies of old ads and info from the manufacturer, Mar-Crest. One of the things on the site is a copy of the manufacturers notice explaining that their products are oven proof, but not flameproof, so it would seem to me that the pot shouldn't be used in the T-well without some means of protecting it from the burner flame. Am I on the right track?
The website is www.mar-crest.com/home.html. The pot I found is the Daisy and Dot Bean Pot and appears to be 1950's vintage just like me, so not THAT old. It's in perfect condition so may well still be worth the original $1.95 purchase price, though it appears most were purchased in grocery stores using store coupons. It sounds like they're fairly common. Here's a picture of the bean pot:
This is the note on not being flameproof:

That's a GREAT find. I would suggest preheating with warm/hot water (don't shock it with boilng water) and using the HeatMaster and SLOWLY bring it to a boil over a low flame. That's what I've done numerous times with my stoneware beanpot. You absolutely need a diffuser with ANY type of pottery unless it's specifically made to deal with direct flame. I have a pot made in SF thatis stovetop and I'd love to find one for the Twell. Maybe I'll take a pic so we all can have yet something to give us an excuse to thrift! I have a cute divided oval baker by Mar-crest and really like it.

Vaporvac - I'd love to see a picture of the SF pot. And any info you might have on the manufacturer and so on. I get down that way a couple of times a year and can keep my eyes open. I love coming across this stuff.
I just put on my list to build a T-well burner diffuser that sits in the well in place of the grate. Not sure when I'll be able to get to it but it should be pretty easy to do.
