Our first house had bell pulls. One room had been a barber shop around 1900 and it appeared to have had something to do with the shop.
I like the article on the pyramids too! I worked in Egypt for 5 years and the Giza pyramids were right there on the edge of Cairo. They always look like they're out in the middle of the desert when you see them on TV or in photos but if you look at them with Google Earth you'll see they're on the edge of the city.

That's cool. I've always been fascinated with old bells. I've often though of putting in a bell pull for my front door. My house was built long after they went out of fashion. There's something about the sound & tone of an old bell rather than a more modern doorbell or buzzer. It somehow evokes an earlier, slower paced time. I bought this old swinging bell from eBay. It came from somewhere in Massachusetts. I built the crude cradle for it. I had toyed with the idea of mounting in the attic space in the gable above my front door. One of my many project not pursued.
