This was originally in Taste of Home. I tried it, and it was GREAT!! I served this with the Sauerbraten & Idlehour noodles. Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage1/4 cup cider vinegar **2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon caraway seed 1 teaspoon celery seed (both seeds were 1/2 tsp, I doubled them) 4 cups shredded red cabbage 1 cup thinly sliced onion ( I used a Vadalia, sliced VERY thin on a mandolin) salt and pepper Directions: 1. In a small bowl, combine vinegar, brown sugar, caraway and celery seeds; set aside. 2. Place cabbage and onion in a saucepan; add a small amount of water. 3. Cover and steam until tender, about 15 minutes. 4. Add vinegar mixture and toss to coat. 5. Season with salt and pepper. 6. Serve warm. **I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you instead use a GOOD German vinegar. My "fave" is this one:

I made this for crockpot night, and it was delish. I added apple chunks and a cut up kielbasa too, to make it more of a main dish than a side. My husband said it was better than my mom’s red cabbage—high praise indeed! She always made it seasoned with cloves and bayleaf, in addition to the sweet and sour. I tried and never quite got mine to taste like hers, so I’m actually really happy to have found a recipe to call my own and my husband likes it better anyway. And to tell the truth, I think I do too!
