Hey. . .that is MY butter keeper berlyn! I've had it for a few months now. They do work, but you have to make sure to really push the butter in to the top so it sticks well. I usually just take it out of the fridge & push it in with my CLEAN thumbs (remember how Julia Child would always assure you her hands were CLEAN when she used them in food?). I'm the only one who uses butter around here so I usually just put a 1/4-1/2 a stick in at a time.

Yes Danny it's your fault (that's what I told DH), cause you shared this great site with us. The instructions say to add water but fails to tell you app. how much. Everything is better with butter ;D

I actually bought mine in the housewares department at Ross. . .although I'll let you blame me for fantes.com , which I've ordered stuff from twice now & been satisfied with everything.
The water just needs to be high enough so you get a seal around the butter holder. I'd say about 1/3 of the way up the base is plenty. You change the water every 3 days or so.

Danny, I just love going to Ross from my kitchenwares!! I've gotten all my name brands there for a fraction of the price. Right now I'm kicking myself for not getting something I saw. A Calphalon Santoku knife. Went back and it's gone, gone, gone. They have a load of Cuisinart Professional Stainless Steel Mandoline Slicer for a reasonable price. I am in need of one since I've worn out my current el cheapo. Anyone have one of these?? Thoughts on them???

I keep trying to decide whether I even need one of those, although I think the pro versions are oh so cool. I have an ancient Cuisinart food processor I bought back in 1983 or 4, I think, and it can do a decent job with thin slicing--not as perfect as a mandoline can, mind you, but good enough. And I can always do it by hand if I have to, so I'm not convinced I should take up more space with one. Of course, if I run in to a nice professional one at the Goodwill or Thrift Town for a few bucks. . .well, you know! And yes, Ross is one of those places you have to grab stuff when you see it. My sister bought a butter keeper (which in turn led to mine), at the Ross near her in Southern Oregon. There was only one and my sister in law coveted it so much my sister parted with it. Well, there was never another to be found at that Ross. But some weeks later both of them spent the weekend with me in Portland when I was there for a conference. A Ross there had several, so both my sister & I snagged one. Of course, I also found, after hauling that thing back in my luggage, that the downtown SF store had a ton of them!

Never seen those before...of course, I want the RED one! Our 1949 Westinghouse fridge has a tiny little flip-doored compartment above the freezer that holds two sticks of butter, completely different idea, of course, but one of those "cool things" about ancient appliances.
And a big "YEAH" on Ross...I mean, where else can you get kitchen utensils, tacky knick-knack glass items and ladies unmentionables at deep discount? ;-) Char got me my favorite bamboo cutting board there for next to nothing, and a great set of pint glasses fer me Guinness, aye laddies and lasses! (Try looking at Tar-zhay or Wally World...nary a pint glass to be seen anywhere).

You guys are so lucky to have Ross by you. They're not in New York . I did get to spend hours in one when I visited my daughter in San Antonio. She likes to call me on the phone while in Ross and tease me. The closest we have are TJ Maxx & Marshalls. A close 2nd & 3rd but no Ross for Less. Janice

OK. I have a butter keeper, too. Mine's out of Polish pottery, but it's the exact same idea. I love tohelook at it, but I'm not so sure I like the functionality of the things.
Am I the only one who ends up with the water smelling funny, even if I change it daily? It always smells like sour milk to me. ick. I admit that my nose is hypersensitive.
I end up just using it on holidays, and then keeping it in the fridge, sans water, until the butter is used up.
What am I doing wrong??

Hi Jenn- I've never had the smell problem, really, unless the butter got in contact with the water. I have almost never put more than 1/2 a stick in because I don't use it fast enough (mine can hold a whole stick). I have had butter get mold on it because I didn't use it fast enough, but that is a different matter. The box for mine said that butter would last in it up to a month. I think it is more like 2 weeks or so.

That's the one Anthea. Ours has tons of cutting boards. I got a small bamboo one there. I try to go there weekly and look for some "good finds and good prices". Their inventory here turns over quite quickly. I need a springform cheesecake pan and have not came across one at our local Ross. When I didn't need one they had a bunch.

My sister in law bought one of these butter keepers, and they loved it. Until that is, Rocky, their boxer found it and loved it too! ;D
I must confess, I love Ross, ( and TJ Maxx, and Marshalls)! I'm always trolling for neat kitchen stuff.

If you can't find your cutting boards at Ross, check out Garden Ridge - more than pottery and fake Ficus trees! www.gardenridge.com/Very reasonable pricing and always a clearance sale on an endcap in each department. I go through a lot of cutting boards as I run them through the dishwasher. (I know, I know, but at least they are clean!)

Ok, does it really keep the butter spreadable? How does this thing work? I love and prefer butter, but spreading it on bread is crazy unless it's softened....

You don't have to refrigerate the butter. The water keeps the seal so the butter doesn't get funky. Here are some FAQ's for butter keepers: www.frenchbutterdish.com/FAQ.htm
