Anyone have recommendations for exterior paint brands? I was looking at California Paints, but the closest dealer is 50 miles away. The options in my neck of the woods are Benjamin Moore, Coranando (sp?), Sherwin Williams, Behr, Glidden, Pratt & Lambert, Porter Paints, Pittsburgh Paints and Valspar.
We are changing the color of our house from bright white with blue trim to burnished red with cream trim and dk. green accent. Our biggest concern is fade. One side of the house is in full sun, the rest of the house in part/full shade.
We're looking to keep prices @ $35-$45 per gallon.
Thanks for the help.

Scottie, You and I are on the same page, time to paint the house. I can tell you what not to use. Valspar or American Heritage. We used app. 10 years ago and started fading after 4 years on the east side that gets full AM sun. Remember though I am in South Texas, hot, hot HOT!! I would go with Benjamin Moore however the dealer closed about 5 years ago. My choices are Behr, Sherwin Williams, Pittsburgh Paints

I know it's not fashionable to pipe up in support o' the Depot, but I've never been disappointed by their paint. Behr rocks.

I also like Behr, though I've never used it outside. My cousin, who paints professionally is another Benjamin Moore fan. Bummer your dealer packed up shop, Berlyn.

I've used their interior (satin for walls, high gloss for trim) for a long time; did some color-matching on an exterior door/trim project for some folks a few years ago and it is holding up well; used their floor paint for over ten years in two of the cabins and it wears great. What I love about Behr is that it's really thick, good brush cling, and coats well. Never had a "runny" paint experience with it.

I do like Behr for interior paints. The new "Ultra" line has peaked my interest for exterior paint. Supposedly, it is has a new formula that protects againt mildew, is fade resistent, is a primer & paint in one and can be applied at colder temperatures. My concern is that is just came out a few months ago, so there are no comparisons in my neighborhood.

It may be too late to chime in here, but recently, asked the question of an independent contractor that I trust. He uses a paint sprayer. He claims that Sherman Williams has the cleanest paint...no icky residue in the 3rd for 4th filter of the sprayer.
I've used Sherman Williams interior paint with a brush. It seemed easy to use and was easy to cut into without brush strokes being noticeable. I'll be using their exterior paint once I finish stripping the garage.
Unfortunately, I can't weigh in as far as fading of color over time.
Good luck with your projects!

Thanks, velvetygrace. Not doing the painting until next spring. We're going to do a test run on the Behr Ultra with our garage first. We'll paint that in our new color scheme this month and see how it holds up over the winter.

Do you have access to Kilz? I swear by it, inside and out. Goes on like a dream, you can add whatever color you want and its sold here by Home Depot and Walmart. www.kilz.com/DutchBoy is okay as well. We used that in the spare bedroom - the original colour was an absolutely awful bright red *shudder*, we chose a nice soft yellow colour and we had to use 2 coats, I believe, as it wasn't Kilz. But hubby made the purchase, not me I painted our first house in Arkansas a sort of lime green (1 coat only) ;D because the whole kitchen, dining, and living room area was this absolutely horrid institutional DARK GRAY! Yeuch! When we moved out, we re-painted it a very soft peachy beige - took 1 coat of paint and there was no bleed through. Plus, the semi-gloss is really nice if you want to be able to just wipe down walls, etc - that's what I used for the living room and bedrooms instead of the satin, I just liked that it wasn't noticeably glossy. The bathroom got the full gloss treatment and it worked very well.
