Last night was our first frost. Very late for us up here in upstate NY, (but not the latest ever) and when I went out to finally clean up the tomato plants, these last few were protected under some of the thicker foliage, and made it through. I did not think to salvage any basil, so I had to use dried basil, alas. Our last tomato salad of a year that saw me ALMOST get sick of fresh tomato sauce, caprese salad, and tomato sandwiches. Almost. It was a fantastic year for my tomatoes. I thought they deserved a shout out!

People don't appreciate the luxury of eating produce out of season. In the not that distant past, if you didn't can it, you were out of luck past the killing frost. For our grandparents, your last harvest would be a lamented celebration until next year.
Two weeks ago, we had a couple of nights that dipped into the 40s. That was the coldest we've been since last spring. The last two nights dipped down there again, so our first frost isn't too far off. Our summer has been pretty mild over all. I'm dreading what this winter will bring.

Supposedly, it is shaping up to be a La Niña year, which means warmer than average for the Northeast. Although I heard the Farmers Almanac predicted a hard winter. We shall see! Anyway, I canned and froze enough to feed an army. Last year when everything shut down in March, we didn’t have to go to a supermarket until May, I think. My hoarding ways stood me in good stead!

Mmmm, I love fresh tomatoes! The grocery store tomatoes have gotten better over the last few years, but they still don't compare to one fresh out of the garden.
We are still near 90 here, so I am jealous of your cool temps! Although we are supposed to be down in the 40s toward the end of this week. Yippee!
