i have no clue where this dish fits but thought it was a hoot. A few years back Chuckie delighted us with a dish from the 50’s called ‘Perfection Salad’. Basically a concoction of salad vegetables infused in jello. It wasn’t that bad but the shredded purple cabbage made it look like an Octopus had fallen into a blender. Well, here’s a picture of another dish from the 50’s....’Spaghetti-O Jello’ with wieners. I think I’ll surprise my Mom with this one next time I’m home. You can still find the recipe online.

🤢🤢🤢🤢
If smallpox was a food it would look just like that!
However, 37 years ago when I was expecting my first child, I probably would have eaten this. One of my cravings was for spaghettios. Only the ones with the little meatballs, though. The other thing was Cap’n Crunch cereal.

And another thing: why did they bother with the cut up hot dogs on top? So inartfully arranged, such a unappetizing color. Like cut-up corpse fingers. They illustrate the complete opposite of “gilding the lily.” Yet there appears to be a bite taken out on the right side. Did the photographer just think what the hell, nothing we do will make this look good, get the shot and be done with it?
This is fun! Post more pictures of awful food and let’s all make fun of it!

🤢🤢🤢🤢 If smallpox was a food it would look just like that! That's a bit harsh. I will admit it's far from appetizing to my eyes. Maybe it's a generational thing. I've heard of things in aspic. The predecessor to Jello, sometimes refereed to as meat Jello. Dishes using it seem to be an upper crust thing in the distant past. Later, before Jello came out, aspic was hailed as a way to use left overs. If you do an image search for aspic recipes, many look quit bizarre, & not in a good way. I believe it was originally a way to preserve food by sealing out air & bacteria. I suppose people developed a taste for it up until the 50s & 60s. I've always found Jello rather unappetizing, mostly because of the texture.
I suppose a dish like this suffers most because it's just out of fashion. There had to be a time when this was thought of as mouth watering. Not so much today though. It's kind of a tribute to how imaginative we are in ways of preparing food. My dad used to like pickled pigs feet. They were packed in a jar with aspic. I thought it rather disgusting, but I've heard they were a popular bar food in days gone by. Billie Holiday sang a song called, Give Me A Pigs Foot & A Bottle Of Beer. Chalk it up to a change in tastes.

I have to wonder if this is really an old recipe or some concoction someone came up with as "retro" and it went viral. I have found lots of photos of it, but I don't see any that include an original ad or cookbook page. Either way, it's funny to think about plopping that down at a potluck!

Glad the kids liked it. You should have them pick one of those recipes and help them make it. 😃

Wow - We used to go to my aunt and uncles place every 4th of July for a big family get together and these recipes really bring back some memories of what would be on the table. Some weren't half bad and a couple were actually pretty good. Part of surviving some of the recipes involved learned skills, like carefully separating the spaghetti-O's from the Jell-O with a fork and then eating it that way. And cold spaghetti-O's were pretty normal: "Mom, I'm hungry". "Well Fix something". I grab a can opener and a spoon, open a can of spaghetti-O's, and lunch is served. And my mom finished her ironing while watching her soaps, uninterrupted.

My Mom still makes some kind of dessert that has whipped cream, marshmallows, orange slices and “something” in it that makes it light green in color. I’ve never tried it because it looks discussing AND I’m not a fan of whipped cream anyway. I used to like it when I was a kid but I guess I used too much on my Jell-O so got burned out on it. Same way with onion rings....my Aunt made the BEST onion rings but after eating too many one time I lost my taste for them.

I suspect that "something" was pistachio pudding mix, dwayner2. It's a type of ambrosia salad. Without the green stuff, I quite like it.
