I've dug up all kinds of info on porcelain enamel, Including how they do it, cleaning and maintenance and so on that some might be interested in and was looking through the various threads to find an appropriate one to post this kind of info in but none seemed to fit, so am starting this one. I'm trying to get my files organized after a hard drive crash and then restoring my files to a new computer so will probably be sticking stuff in here as I go.
This first item is a link to a PDF you can open or download. It's just a 1953 Conference Report on Porcelain Enamel in the Building Industry but is the best source of info on how it's done and options that I've found. Some stuff has changed, like the use of lead as a flux, but it's still good info. Even though the target is the building industry they talk about stuff like enameling roasters, stove tops (with photos) and so on. I found it fascinating. You can find it at www.dahp.wa.gov/sites/default/files/Porcelain_Enamel_in_the_Building_Industry_1953.pdf .

Thank you. I love reading about this stuff. You're welcome. I really like reading this stuff too. I think it's really helpful to know this stuff when you're working on it.
So when you were a kid and other kids were playing with toys, were you the one sitting there taking one apart to figure out what made it tick?

I downloaded it, but I haven't got back to reading it yet.
I'm trying to step back & decompress from things a bit. I strained or jammed up my back somehow. I've been in agony for a couple of weeks now. I have no insurance or money, so things like this either work themselves out or it kills me. Those are my choices. I've been taking it as easy as possible trying to rest my back. The last four days I finally have resorted to taking aspirin. I'm not sure if they're helping, or it's just getting better or both.
Of course since I don't feel like working on anything, I was adjusting the flapper in my toilet tank, so I shut the water off. Well apparently the washer in the valve must have become dislodged, so now it's blocking the water line, so I'll have replace the valve. I got a new valve, but I've got to dig my way back to the main water shut off, because I've piled a bunch of stuff in front of it in the basement. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, "it's always something". On the bright side, the one cook at work who's been aggravating me recently got fire, so there's that anyway.
I did finally cancel my cable TV saving me $68 a month & got an appointment to get the recalls on my car fixed for the leaking fuel pump, ignition switch & lock for Monday. At least the girl on the phone at Kenny Kent Chevrolet was a lot more courteous than the jerky assistant service manager at Romain Cadillac Buick GMC.
Life is such a soap opera whether we want it to be or not.

They say the best thing for an aching back is to keep moving. Unless you have bursitis. A good chiropractor is also helpful...and usually not as expensive as a doctor. I hope you are on the mend, Pooka!

Probably a lot of us can relate with back problems and I certainly can. I was injured when I was in the Navy and have had constant back pain since. Every situation is different but in my case aspirin won't touch it but Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) will. And ice. I put ice in a ziplock, lay on my stomach, and lay the bag of ice directly on my back and move it around the painful area every couple of minutes. They say a bag of frozen peas is supposed to be better but I haven't noticed any difference and darned if I'm wasting a good bag of peas lol.
I just replaced a valve on one or our toilets too. Same problem. Of course when you pull the valve that pipe nipple is always almost plugged. If you're lucky you can clean it out but most of the time I end up replacing the nipple. A brass nipple is best (they don't seem to clog up like a steel one does) and the trick to not having it leak in the wall is 4 or 5 wraps of Teflon tape and then pipe dope on the tape. A plumber showed me that and since I've been doing that I have never had a leak. Knock on wood...
I hope your back gets better soon. That really takes it out of you.

I'm sorry for your back, Pooka. Don't hesitate to take aspirin; it's an anti-infammatory which is what you want. You might also try Aspercreme. I was also going to suggest ice, but Mach12 beat me to it! : ) It's the best. I used to resist it, but one time when I couldn't get up from the floor I used it and voila! It's another miracle. It also works well warding off migraines as it constricts the blood vessels.
Mach12, I was that kid and remain so today. My Dad was a Professional Engineer and did everything including designing and building a couple of our houses so I think I got it from him. He's still that way and my Mom was no slouch either. Besides Chambers stoves I really dig figuring out steam heating systems, which as you may remember, my moniker references. People think it's geeky and their eyes glaze over, but I don't care. It's nice to have this form and heatinghelp.com to share my passions. My other one is growing all manner of roses which still gets eye rolls, but not quite as soon in the conversation. : )))

Being 6' 2" & always thin, like 140 lbs. soaking wet, there isn't to much to me but skin & bones. I've strained my back before, most likely bending the wrong way. I think I just get things out of line. After a few weeks, the work themselves back where they should be. I've got a high tolerance for pain, though it still hurts like the dickens. I just put up with it by grumbling. I've actually heard cussing does help with pain. It's been studied. Your right nana. Moving does help. I find once I'm at work standing up & moving, I feel it, but it's not so bad. But if I sit down for any length of time, it's agony to stand back up.
That valve won't too much trouble once I can get to the shut off valve for the house. All the pipes are original to 1939. I believe the nipple for the toilet is chrome plated brass. It's just with the aching back, I don't relish crouching down between the vanity & the toilet to work on it. But this flushing it with a few pitcher of water is getting old real fast. I think I'll wait a few more days till my back feel a bit better. I'd get my brother over to help me, but I not a very good supervisor.

LOL I am reading through some of the older messages and this one made me laugh! That was my brother and I, we were always taking things apart to see how they worked.
