Just putting this forward for comment. Does anyone else prefer old aluminum ice cube trays to just about anything else?

Ha, old memories of the CRAAACK they made when we cranked the handle back. .. . and the smell of the freezer on a hot southern california day. Truthfully, I love the ice maker in my freezer but ask me again if it goes on the fritz, as they always do. . . .

Ahhh that CRAAACK. It brings back memories. I remember those from when I was little & we still had the old 50s GE refrigerator before it got moved to the garage in favor a a bigger one. Then they came out with plastic trays that just required a little twist to get the cubes out. That relegated the old aluminum ones to the basement, attic or scrap bin.
If I recall correctly, Whirlpool bought out the failing Servel to get their patented design for the ice maker they still all use today. It's kind of lost on me, because I've always preferred cold drinks without ice. I'll admit the old aluminum trays made better cubes than the automatic ones though.

Those trays really bring back memories! My mother mastered making summer treats with those aluminum trays. I guess you'd call them Mini-popsicles. Quite a variety, too. Even some made from chocolate pudding. She had it figured out. There was no "check in with me so I know you're okay". It was more like "sandwiches and treats will be ready at noon" and she made enough for all the kids in the neighborhood. All the rest of the parents knew where to find their kids.

I'm with you, Pooka. I really dislike ice in my drinks. "Cellar temperature" is fine with me. I got really tired of the plastic trays always developing cracks and leaking. You don't see too many of the old trays, but whenever I spot a nice one at a sale I grab it. They're always cheap, too, a nice bonus.

Those plastic tray became throwaways on a regular basis. Just another consumable made of cheap oil.
mach12, my mom did the same thing, but she had those Tupperware Popsicle trays. My aunt worked for the local distributors, so we got all the Tupperware goodies.

There was no "check in with me so I know you're okay". Yeah, sadly our generation was the last of the Free Range Children. At 9am mom would say "Be home by dark or call me if you will be late." And if you were late and didn't call, there was H&%L to pay.

Same here. With our stingray bikes, we ranged for miles unescorted. Today they put parents in jail for allowing such behavior.
I worry about our younger generation. I know they are no different than us in potential, but their life experience is so radically different than ours. They aren't as well informed or adaptable as we are. I tell kids at work all the time, pay attention to your surroundings & think about what you're doing. Too often you can't pull them away from their cell phones. There's a whole treatises there on the changing of the ages from our slow walking style to today's supersonic pace. It makes me weary just thinking about it.
