After having problems, I was encouraged by Pooka's success to figure this out. As it turns out, it couldn't be easier.
This works for Flickr hosted photos, maybe others, too.
I think that the problem is that the photo web hosting sites like Flickr have figured out the problem that folks in newsgroups were having and fixed it. But the newsgroups didn't keep up with their instructions.
So if you read somewhere else that you should click on the little box that says "insert image" (second row, fourth box from left) just above the message you're composing, and to paste the url for your photo between two resulting sets of bracketed s, don't do it. That's what's complicating things by including too much code.
Do this instead:
1. Open your Flickr account.
2. Click on the photo that you want to post here.
3. Click on the "Share" button to the upper left of the photo.
4. Click the "Grab the HTML/BBCode" link. Make sure the "BBCode" button at the bottom is filled in.
5. A bunch of gibberish will pop up in the box below where it says "copy and paste the code below"
6. That gibberish is the url for your photo. Right click on it, once, and it will all highlight. Click "copy" on the drop down menu that popped up.
7. Go to your message, here, on this board and place the cursor in your message where you want the photo to be.
8. Right click, again, and click "paste" on the drop-down menu. And there you have it.
9. To test it, hit the "preview" button at the bottom of the page where you're composing the message.
And voila, you're a genius!
Unfortunately, Flickr insists on including a photo credit and a credit to their site. If you mess around with the code, you can make that go away. Or you might make a mess of the whole thing. And it is how they make their money.
Hope this works.
