I always try to bake a little something for my kids on Sunday morning. This morning I made their favorite muffin, Sour Cream Chocolate Chip. The basic recipe is very adaptable and is great when you substitute berries for the chips. Sour Cream Chocolate Chip Muffins 5 T. butter, melted and cooled 2/3 cup sugar 1 t. vanilla 1/4 t. salt 1 cup sour cream 1 large egg 3/4 t. baking soda 3/4 t. baking powder 1-1/2 cups flour 3/4 cups mini chocolate chips 1. Preheat oven to 350º. 2. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla, salt, sour cream and egg; mix well. Stir in baking soda and baking powder. Add flour and stir until well combined; stir in chocolate chips. 3. Fill paper-lined or greased muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake for 18 minutes or until done. Cool. Yield: 1 dozen.

Yummers! Sour cream is such a great addition to baking...adds a great texture and flavor to things like muffins and even cookies. I'll have to dig out the recipe for "Southern Cream Cookies" that's in my mom's tattered old copy of the "Better Homes And Gardens Cookbook" from the 50s...

I love the old cookbooks. Buy them at garage sales when I see them. They have some great old recipes.

Treatmaker I love 'em, too...especially the ones with the old "Eames Era" line drawings as page decorations, so very 50s. Plus, it's back before all the media-hyped paranoia about fat/cholesterol, so you KNOW the food in there tastes good. "Give me Real Butter or give me death!" Or, as Emeril would say: "Pork Fat Rules!" Although, I've been watching Bourdain use duck fat and saying that duck fat is the ultimate...gotta try that!

Bourdain...ahhh... that man makes me LAUGH! I thought Craig was going to swallow his tongue the other night. They were eating a braised sheeps head and Anthony plucked the eye out, put it in his mouth...
From Craig's chair I here a lot of gulping and "urk, urk, urk" noises.

Treatmaker I love them too.....my favorites include a 1937 The Herald Tribune's Home Institute Cook Book from 1937 and The Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book from 1954. Not only are the recipes great, but the dialogue on keeping a happy home is priceless!

I have a cookbook from the late 1800's with some hand written recipes in it. Unfortunately it's in a very brittle state. It has everything in it, even a chapter devoted to setting up the home for the wake and funeral.
