It really is a great soup. Something about it makes it so irresistible to me. I always eat more than I should, but I comfort myself, as I push away from the table with a Thanksgiving-level full tummy, with the thought that it’s healthy and full of fiber and vitamins!

FYI, I made my friend’s recipe the other day pretty much the same as it is, but I put a kielbasa in and did NOT add any broth, so it just had the liquid from the tomatoes and cabbage etc, and then gave it about 10 minutes of gas in the thermowell and all afternoon with the gas off —delicious! The smoky kielbasa gave it a much different flavor, but just as enjoyable...more like a stew than a soup. We had it with boiled, buttered parsley potatoes. Simple and good!

Trying an experiment with this and I don’t see how it can fail. In an attempt to use up a glut of cabbage that persists even after making sauerkraut and a variety of different coleslaws, I made a giant full single kettle of it WITHOUT the broth (I know it comes out fine, see the post directly above) and it’s in the Thermowell right now, and my plan is to freeze it in quarts, as a kind of soup starter concentrate. Then when we want this soup, which is fairly often in winter, I will mix a quart of concentrate with a quart of plain broth, and have instant gratification. Just call me Mrs. Campbell!
